Not really sure what I’m going to write about, due to me not really being involved in college. Maybe I can talk about my involvement in working and being part of the hard working college student community. But, I don’t think that’s what this assignment is about. I think that it’s supposed to be more in-depth. Okay, so I’ll just talk about my high school days, I was pretty involved back then. Also, it wasn’t to long ago and I am still kind of involved in this particular club anyway. I am talking about yearbook. Yes, yearbook, it took almost 10 years of grade school to find a club and actually be able to use my voice and feel like I’m being heard. I was the Co-editor in Chief and my duties were foreseeing (I think that’s the right word) the page designs, editing photos, and last but not least my favorite covering events.

Honestly, not really sure where I am going with this story, but I guess I’ll begin with the end. So, there I was with my quill and scroll tassell (I’ll figure out the name of it later) family and my senior class surrounding me. What a great day that was, my high school graduation of course. Ok, so maybe I shouldn’t start with the ending, this is really hard to type out how I joined yearbook in the first place. Nevermind, I think I just figured it out. Alright, so my younger brother and I were in high school together and we decided to have at least one class together. The only class that we could have been together in was an elective. For obvious reasons, we were in different grades so that means different core classes. Anyways, the elective we chose was yearbook. There we were in yearbook, attached to each other as always, sometimes people thought that we were twins. Which was weird since we did not look alike whatsoever, but we did both wear glasses, so I guess. Anywho, yeah we only talked to each other, so at first like any teen cliche movie, I didn’t give a damn (I will find another phrase later). Not only that I didn’t give a damn, the whole entire class didn’t give a damn either. Like, our teacher seemed like she was all over the place about explaining things.

However, I discovered that I actually loved to write and interview people, I’m referring to covering events. I also loved taking pictures, which goes in hand of covering events. It was this one school event that really sparked my interest in yearbook and journalism. I’m not really going to go in detail about the event. It’s a lot but I’ll rehash this when I go into draft two, because I don’t have the name of the event in front of me. You know what I honestly think it was the feeling of exhilar (hopefully that’s the right word) I got when I wrote my first piece and it was published in the school’s magazine as a teaser. It was an advertising technique we used to get people to buy the yearbook. I’m still trying to figure out what genres are exactly and how to put the word itself in context. So, I can say that I exercised genres in yearbook like advertising the book itself, expressing my opinions and covering student events, and using photography as another form of story writing (honestly this sentence is all over the place, but I’ll tweak this later). Being part of yearbook was such a pivotal moment for me, I would spend nights and weekends putting all of my energy towards editing pages. I even went on out of town competitions for yearbook.

Alright, I’m officially stuck and have no idea about what to write about. Yes, I was apart of yearbook, also known as a community. Yes, our genres of communication included, writing teaser stories to get people to buy the book. It also included the pictures we took of the students (now that I think about it, this sentence actually does not sound right at all) ok, lastly it included me writing opinion pieces and covering students events and this is how I felt like I was being heard and this was actually the first time in my life that I felt like I was being heard.

It was the beginning of my junior year in a new school, and the only person I knew was my younger brother. Although, I did keep a close knit circle of friends for the past five years of my life, coming out of my shell to meet new people was not my forte. Therefore, I was not much of a socialite last year or any year at that, so that school year had to be my year. I wanted to reinvent myself since I didn't know anyone, and that’s exactly what I did or at least I think I did. A few nights before classes I browsed the school’s website to see if there were any activities and clubs that I could immediately be apart of. It was kind of a fail, due to the school’s choice of including the millions of sports team instead of the other clubs that I was sure they offered.

However, I did stumble upon the tons of electives and found some that stook out to me. Like, band, art, and musical theatre. But, since I had my brother looking over my shoulder, browsing the classes together. He strongly persisted that we should take a class together, and I of course said yes, for some odd reason. It took us twenty minutes to semi-agree on a class, but my brother being the sore loser he was, I ended up choosing yearbook for his sake instead of musical theatre. Being the ‘it’s the end of the world’ type teen I was, I stomped out the room and ignored my brother until our extremely long walk to school the next morning. Therefore, because of that decision, I dreaded my first day of school, all I could think about was how I was supposed to reinvent myself for the new academic year. Instead, I was already going to be apart of class I knew I would not enjoy.

So, there we were in yearbook,my younger brother and I, with our unplanned matching green collared shirts ironed to the crisp from the night before, our large kinky afros that could easily be traced into one huge circle which had almost touched the wall that stood behind us and our attention not focusing on anyone but each other, because we were both new and did not know anyone yet. We were attached to each other as always, sometimes people thought that we were twins. Which was weird since we did not look alike whatsoever, however everyone assumed so, because we both wore glasses and would always be seen together.

At first like any teen cliche movie, I didn’t give a damn about yearbook. Not only that I didn’t give a damn, the whole entire class appeared to not give a damn either. Our teacher seemed like she was all over the place about explaining things. Therefore, no one really paid attention to her. I found out that yearbook was actually a class where you could walk around the school during other classes, and pretend that you’re covering an event and if any teacher/ and or school security would stop you, all you had to do was flash them a lanyard that said press pass on it and they’ll just let you roam around.

Yearbook was supposed to be a meaningless elective, that seemed interesting on paper. But ended up being a total bore in reality. However, two months in of covering events, changed my outlook on the class, and here I am today writing about a community that I was part of and actually felt heard in.

I discovered that I actually loved to write and interview people, I’m referring to covering events. I also loved taking pictures, which goes in hand of covering events. so, the community I’m choosing is yearbook. You know what I honestly think it was the feeling of exhilar. I got when I wrote my first piece and it was published in the school’s magazine as a teaser. It was an advertising technique we used to get people to buy the yearbook.

As, I got deeper into the school year, so did the yearbook deadline to submit the pages. There were 366 pages to submit and not a lot of time to do this, due to there not being a stable and reliable team to help out.

Now, that I cared about yearbook, it was the time to build a reliable team, out of what i hoped to include all 160 students from the yearbook class population. However, we only got 30 students to contribute to the cause. My brother was in of course on building, and we mostly reached out to our friends in the class. Then, we made flyers and asked the other communications teachers, who taught tv production, newspaper, and literary magazine to hand them out. Our strategy somewhat was a success, even though there were only 30 of us, we made it work and assigned each other to positions based on our interests. The main roles given were, sports, clubs, senior activities, ads, editing, proofreading, and design. I was the co-editor in chief and my brother was the editor in chief. So, even if I wanted to escape the craze of deadlines in yearbook, my brother would always bring it up.

Genres we interacted with were writing about events that took place in school and taking pictures of the events as well. In retrospect I didn’t necessarily felt like I was being heard using my voice, but more of being heard on paper when I wrote my opinion pieces for the school’s magazine, which was also part of yearbook. More or less I was also being heard when I would instruct the newbies on how to properly take pictures and cover events.

Being part of yearbook was such a pivotal moment for me, I would spend nights and weekends putting all of my energy towards editing pages. Most of my attention for the last two years of high school was geared toward yearbook, due to the team that was build and the friendships that were created. Yearbook, was fun, stressful, and at the end sad because I didn't want to leave my amazing staff.

Project 1

Reflection after draft 1:

My conference was scheduled from 9:12-9:27am. During this conference, we discussed my paper's flaws like, the ending of the narrative turning into a formal essay and I also brought up a few words that I had thought I used excesively throughout the narrative. Words like, 'yearbook and therefore'. Matt said that it was okay to use 'yearbook' because that's what my text is. However, I had to change a couple of 'therefore's'  I used. At the end, of the conference, I was told to write more about my brother, because it seemed to be the text from the beginning of the narrative but at the I stopped for some reason. Overall,  the conference was very helpful.

Final Reflection

In the middle of the semester I was told by my advisor that I did not have to take ENC 2135-141, at first, I was upset about it. But not because of the curriculum, I was upset at the fact that this class was at 8am for two days of the week over the course of 6 months. However, I quickly got over that because I was able to unleash my writing skills. Although, I'm not the best at grammar, details, or other necessities needed to write a 'proper' paper. I can claim one thing and that is being somewhat ok at writing narratives. For project one's conference Mat told me this after I said that I was horrible writer.

Transferring from a two-year community college and this semester being my first, I already had the assumption that my classes were going to be 10 times harder. But I did not think that an ENC course would be part of this issue, only because I have received close to straight 'A's' in my ENC 1101, 1102, and even in my LIT class. To be honest in the beginning weeks of ENC 2135-141 the assignments that were given seemed very confusing. However, I somewhat was able to pull through with a 'B' on project one. In my opinion, this was only possible because Mat has required conferences for every project.

For project one we were told to write about a meaningful text within a community where we felt heard. My text were the times me and my brother were in high school covering events for our yearbook class, and the community I felt like I belonged was yearbook. So, for project one's conference it was scheduled from 9:12-9:27am. During this conference, we discussed my paper's flaws like, the ending of the narrative turning into a formal essay and I also brought up a few words that I had thought I used excessively throughout the narrative. Words like, 'yearbook and therefore'. Matt said that it was okay to use 'yearbook' because that's what my text is. However, I had to change a couple of 'there fore's' I used. At the end, of the conference, I was told to write more about my brother, because it seemed to be the text from the beginning of the narrative but at the I stopped for some reason. Overall, the conference was very helpful.

For project two we were told to write about a community that we're gravitating towards and to interview a few people that are in that community. This project was also the largest one out the three we were assigned, it was also the most difficult for me. I was a little confused for the assignment, so I waited until the conference to ask questions. After, the conference I decided to write about my job and how I am working college student. My conference was scheduled from 8:15-8:27 am. Although I showed up late, my paper was still able to discuss my paper's flaws. I also did not email Mat my paper, so we went over the main points of project 2 and where I should be. In the beginning of the mini-conference due to not understanding my thesis. however, toward the end of the conference Mat made an outline of what my project should include. Overall, the conference was very helpful.

For project three, we were told to create a multi-genre campaign based on the genres explored in the previous projects. There was no conference for project three, but I was able to go to Mat's office hours. During the office visit, Mat told me some of the genre's I could use for the campaign. My project 3 was about working college students maintaining the balance between school and work. Being new to the University atmosphere and being surrounded by urgent responsibilities can be overwhelming to students. Especially, when the student is their own source of income, there is always a slight chance that the student may drop out due to this issue. However, I plan to create a few resources for full time students with part time and/or full-time jobs. One resource would be creating a Pinterest priority board on what the student should be focusing on and how to manage their time. Another resource is going to be a guide on choosing the planner and learning how to plan their class schedule and events around their work schedule.

esearch Proposal

Title: A Working Student--Conflicting Schedules

Research question:

Clubs and organization at universities shouldn’t have a mandatory and/or specific meet time?

Summary:

I plan to research and write about how organizations and clubs at universities all seem to have the same standard meet up time. I also plan to write about how my schedule and other working students schedule conflicts with the the clubs standard meeting times. Lastly, the majority of clubs and organizations at universities are known to provide lifelong connections and can help speed up the newly grad hire rate.

Questions that will guide my research:

  • Would changing the clubs and organizations meeting times be more inconvenient for the non-working college student population?

  • Can students form lifelong career connections if they have not joined a club and/or organization?

  • Is it possible for working students to join a club and/or organization with their schedule?

Purpose:

Majority of my days are spent running to class from work, with only 30 minutes to spare. I’ve managed to balance a full time job, friendships, being in school full time, and health on my schedule for the past two years at a community college. But, after transfering from a small college to a large university I haven’t been able to add on anything else on my plate.

I am gravitating toward the college student working community, due to not being able to join organizations, whether it be conflicting club meetings or simply not having the time.

Project 2

Interview Summary

Interview Summary w/ Sherry Legros

  • Would changing the clubs and organizations meeting times be more inconvenient for the non-working college student population?

  • Can students form lifelong career connections if they have not joined a club and/or organization?

  • Is it possible for working students to join a club and/or organization with their schedule?

  • Do you believe that being apart of a university club and/or organization increase your chances of being hired right after graduation?

  • Do you think being apart of a university club and/or organization is important?

  1. I think it would honestly be more convenient because it would give the chance for the non working students and the working college students to all participate in the clubs.

  2. Yes, um there are plenty of connections that. Hmm I’m trying to think… because a lot of clubs that students are joining are stuff that their interested in. So, it will be a good connection towards their career.

  3. It’s very possible, you just have to know how to manage your time. You just have to make sure you have time to work, study, and be apart of the club and/or organization that you’re in.

  4. Well yeah, I mean honestly because you were involved in some type of club, because when they are looking at your grades and gpa. They are looking to see other things you were involved in throughout your college career.

  5. Yes, I do think that it’s important. I believe that students should at least be apart of one club. My reason would be, because I am at the school and the least you can do is get involved and honestly it’s a great way to make career connections and meet new people, learn new things, so why not? It also would look good on your resume.

What a silly blog post? I know, but most students do not have planners. Especially, in the age of technology. That is why we have phones right? But, no sometimes it’s easier to have everything sorted out on paper just in case your phone’s calendar deletes something.

Here are 4 steps on choosing the right planner.

Step 1: Where to buy one? If your balling on a budget then Dollar Tree is the place to go, because they’re all a $1. However, if you’re like me then you will probably want something cute to look at, that comes with stickers and paper holders. So, you’ll want to go to an arts & crafts store for that. Michaels or Hobby Lobby, there’s always some type of sale going on so the lowest planner on sale would be around $14.

Step 2: Buy a planner that suits your style. In my opinion, a bright colored planner with inspirational quotes smacked all over it, suits me because its motivating and never gets ‘old’.

Step 3: Always buy new pens, pencils, highlighters and/or colored sharpies to have the whole planning ‘experience’ you’d want to color coat your schedule. So you will know by the color of the plan, where to go without reading it.

Step 4: Spend some time choosing a planner, make sure it comes with stickers or something else other than just a planner. Get your money’s worth, remember that this planner should be dedicated to the entire year. Not just one semester.

Log Apr 5

  • Attendance was taken by Mat because he forgot to bring the notecards.

  • There need to be 700 words for the conference reflections.

  • We then discussed Project Three and we were shown examples from Mat’s previous class from last semester.

  • Project three has to be real and not made up.

  • The class was canceled on Thursday.

  • There were three mini-presentations

  • One of them about an inspirational Thai Life Insurance commercial

  • The second was a scene from the show ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’

  • The third was a parody of football refs playing fantasy football by a professional YouTuber

  • Mat makes comments on how he did not know there were professional YouTubers

  • Lastly, the fourth was a trailer on the musical ‘The Showman’

Non- traditional Text Presentation

This is was non- traditional because of not a lot of teachers like any physical contact with their students. It's also different because the teacher is doing more than the standard school curriculum he is actually trying to find a connection to where students feel more comfortable and opened to learning through music.
