Blog #2 "I Once was Miss America

Roxane Gay used the sweet valley high series as an escape from reality by connecting with the characters in the books.For example, one of the connections Gay had found was between her and Jessica the ‘bad girl’ of the series; because they both were misunderstood. Gay describes her grade school experience as being the only minority in the entire school and being teased about it. However, instead of focusing on teased, Gay still had the confidence of telling her classmates that she would be Miss America one day. In my opinion, a girl, Gay, had taken her connections to the series and utilized them. Which in turn shows how deeply involved she was in the series. At the end of the article, Gay says “Books are often far more than just books”. This quote is a great example of how the series has helped her.
